This is not meant to be the photo of a mountain, but rather the photo of its shadow projected into the surrounding landscape (you can easily see this shadow on the left of this image).
I've chosen this title, a bit "artistic", as at first glance it seems really to see a mountain in the landscape, but then you realize that you're dealing with a huge shadow.

I took this picture at sunset from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone (3,538 meters/11,603 feet), the highest and most stylish peak of Susa valley, Italy.
Obviously you can not see the mountain itself because I was in its very summit. You can find on the net a lot of photos of mount Rocciamelone, as well as many pics taken during the day from its summit.
Here I am much more interested in showing what happens when the day fades away... Mysterious play of light and shadow are revealing ephemeral phenomena that most of us would not have imagined.
I was setting things to spend the night at high altitude (as I often do) and I remember that I was going on the North side of the summit to get a bit of clean snow to melt for water, looking East I saw this huge area, conical and dark... I thought "wow, the mountain is projecting herself into the valley below!" ... and I got this shot, thanks to the low rays of the setting sun in the West, exactly behind me and my camera!
Looking at this picture it's also possible to deduce the position of the North (just look at the snow covered ridge below), and the South (still warmed by the last red rays of the sun).
At dawn you get the same effect of shadow projection, but obviously with the cone pointing West due to the Sun rising East.

I am very pleased also to say that this picture was chosen by the National Geographic as Picture of the Day (May 15th 2011).
