Picture taken on May 24th 2012, more than one hour and a half after moonset, while gazing at the dark skies in the Sommeiller mountain area, Susa Valley, Italy.

Wandering widely above 2.500 meters, I found these two large rocks that stood still in the dark of the night, under the massive presence of the Milky Way.
Quite a great subject for a long exposure.
In their austere simplicity these monoliths brought me back to the prehistoric monuments of the Neolithic or, why not, to the haunting stone statues of Easter Island... really one day I hope to pay a visit to the Moai... although these unique sculptures are located in the exact opposite of the globe from where I live.
Well, in the meantime I keep working with the elements I have :-)

I'm impressed over the details, you were able to see all that through the naked eye? How often does that happen over Italy in Susa Valley?

here you are the data:

NO moon, remote place
30 sec, f/4, ISO 4.000, 17mm full frame
(manual focusing, tripod, mirror lock up, remote shutter release)
using Canon 5D Mark II + Canon 17-40 f/4 lens...

the camera is perfect, the lens is great for landscape but not the best for night photography... the Canon 24mm f/1.4 (or something equivalent from other manufacturers) would be perfect... anyhow at the moment I can't afford such a bright and expensive lens, if you can just don't hesitate :-)

Hello there, Thank you so much, for kindly giving me a little advise. I thought you were using a tracking device! I have a cropped sensor but have a 17mm lens. I will experiment with that and maybe do mutable exposures and stitch them together. Amazing photo, It must give you a major buzz seeing how well it come out.Much Appreciated :)
